Małym sielskim miasteczkiem wstrząsa makabryczna zbrodnia. Wśród pól kukurydzy zostaje znalezione ciało dziewczyny. Morderca odciął jej głowę ostrym narzędziem, prawdopodobnie kosą. W śledztwo zostaje zaangażowana początkująca detektywka, Julia Dobrowolska. To najpoważniejsze zlecenie w dotychczasowej karierze kobiety stawiającej pierwsze kroki w tak męskim zawodzie. Pracy nie ułatwiają jej niechętny inspektor policji ani dziennikarz śledczy, na bieżąco relacjonujący widzom postępy w sprawie tak zwanego Żniwiarza.
Julia szybko przekona się, jak wiele sekretów skrywają mieszkańcy miasteczka zdający się wiedzieć wszystko o wszystkich…
